Benfluorex was used as an anorectic and antilipidemic agent in some countries from the mid-1970s (not in the USA). European approval was withdrawn in 2009, due to the drug causing serious cardiovascular side effects (heart valve disease) which arise from its fenfluramine-like activity [1,3].
